Fats That Heal

We all know that too much fat can kill us. But what we may not know is that there are fats that are beneficial for our health, if taken in an appropriate manner.

Canadian nutritionist Udo Erasmus is a firm believer that humans need to avoid fats that kill -- the trans fatty acids. But he also believes we need to increase our intake of fats that heal -- the essential fatty acids.

"Humans need the right amount of fats and oils in their diet -- between 15 and 20 percent -- and these fats must be of the right kind," he explained.

In comparison, trans fatty acids raised the risks of cardiovascular disease, elevated cholesterol, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, premenstrual syndrome, cancer, weight increase and a host of other degenerative diseases.

Essential fatty acids -- namely Omega-3 and 6 -- have many healthy benefits including strengthening the immune system, lowering the risk factors for cardiovascular disease, help in weight loss, improvement in digestion, skin and hair, and lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. They are also essential for rebuilding and producing new cells.

"These fats are essential nutrients, which are important for life and health. Our body cannot produce them and they must come from outside sources such as food or food supplements. Essential fatty acids are as important to our health as protein, vitamins and minerals. If you do not get enough of these, you would not be able to stay healthy; you would suffer from deficiency symptoms."

He added: "To ensure we get the healthy benefits of essential fatty acids, we have to get the right ratio of two to one, that is two Omega 3 to one Omega-6. Too much or too little can cause deterioration."

Humans need more Omega-3 -- also known as alpha-linolenic acid -- as it has the most pronounced benefits on the health.

Its benefits include lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, reducing the risk of blood clots, heart diseases, strokes, decreasing inflammation, joint pains, swelling and stiffness, and improving mental health and moods.
