Tomato Gardening - Know These Secrets to Choose Healthy Nursery Plants

Millions of people each year flock to the nursery in an effort to jump start their tomato growing season. That's because we know that 'growing our own' produces much juicier, tastier, tomatoes than the baseball-shaped shipping-crate tomatoes at our local market.

Nursery plants are started from seed under controlled greenhouse conditions and sold by the grower when they reach a certain size. Prestarted plants are a quicker and simpler alternative to starting your own tomatoes from seed, as this can be the most demanding part of the growing process.

Tomato Blight Treatment

Tomato blight treatment consists of getting rid of the diseased parts of the plant, and… to know more, read the article below.

One of the greatest woes or dread of every gardener is blight, a fungal infection that occurs in two forms; late blight and early blight. The first one is caused by the Phytophthora infestans, and the other one, by what is known as Alternaria solani. These organisms are also known to jeopardize other plants such as potatoes (causing potato blight) and members of the family Solanaceae. Out of these two, late blight is known to be the most severe; it was responsible for causing the European, Irish and Highland potato famines in the 1840's. Blight can easily spread from plant to plant, eventually infecting the entire colony. One of the important steps in tomato blight treatment is to identify the symptoms at the earliest. Most people fail to do so, and by the time they realize that their plants have been attacked by a blight infestation, a significant damage is already caused. The lower leaves of the plants are the ones that must be watched out for. The disease causes black or brown circles on them. These circles usually have a darker outer ring, with a light shaded center. With time, as the infections spread, more and more leaves develop these circles, eventually turning to yellow, and the entire plant is destroyed.

Tomato - Fruit or Vegetable

Is tomato a fruit or vegetable? The answer to this question is not straight. Tomato can be both, a fruit or a vegetable, depending upon your perspective. Read on to know more..

The confusion if tomato is a fruit or a vegetable, is as old as tomato itself. Although, science has already answered this question, common people still fumble when it comes to deciding, if tomato is a fruit or vegetable.

Tomato Fruit or Vegetable - Botanical Perspective

Botanical science defines fruits, as ripened ovaries of the flowering plants. Thus, fruits are the dissemination of seeds in flowering plants. Going by this definition, tomato is definitely a fruit. But that would also mean that peas, eggplants, pumpkins, capsicum, cucumber etc. are fruits! Seeds are the part of a plant that make a fruit a 'fruit' and vegetable a 'vegetable'. The term 'vegetable' does not exist in botany. Hence according to scientists, all the seed producing flowering plants produce fruits and not vegetables.

Tomatillos – The Essential Ingredient in Green Salsa

You love salsa and chips. You find that you’re eating more and more Mexican food, but are you familiar with tomatillos and salsa verde, or green salsa? Why not find out what you’ve been missing.

By Earl Hunsinger

You’ve probably seen them in the produce section of your local grocery store and wondered what they were. Usually the ones available in the grocery store look like small green tomatoes with lantern shaped paper husks around them. At the same time, because the name sounds similar, when asked if they have tomatillos, some that are unfamiliar with them may confuse them with tommy toe tomatoes, which is a variety of cherry tomatoes. While they are related to tomatoes, tomatillos are a different fruit altogether. To make it even more confusing, in most of Mexico they are known as tomate verde, or green tomato. Even the name tomatillo, which is used in northern Mexico and the US, can be translated as little tomato.

Treatment-Resistant Depression

How well is your depression treatment working? Does it help, but not enough – and you still don’t feel as well as you used to? Or is your depression treatment simply not working at all?

If so, you could have treatment-resistant depression, also called refractory depression. Unfortunately, depression treatments don’t always work. As many as two-thirds of people with depression aren’t helped by the first antidepressant they try. Up to a third don’t respond to several attempts at treatment.

Treatment-resistant depression can leave you hopeless. Months or even years can go by without any relief. And after the effort it took to get help, it can be demoralizing when you’re just not getting better.

Depression and Divorce

How does depression affect marriage and relationships?

The 20-something couple, married just a few years, was eagerly looking forward to the birth of their first baby.

Labor and delivery went fine, and the baby was born healthy. But problems began when the new mom, overwhelmed by motherhood, suffered depression.

"The husband had to take care of everything," recalls Joan R. Sherman, MFT, a licensed marriage and family therapist in Lancaster, Pa., who saw the couple in counseling. When he was at work, he worried that his wife was so depressed she wasn't paying needed attention to the baby. He became so worried he secretly set up a "nanny cam."

Your Pearly Whites: New Warnings About DIY Teeth Whitening--What You Need to Know

Are you concerned about getting your teeth whiter? We live in a white-teeth-obsessed culture, and unfortunately, experts are now warning that the quest for perfectly white teeth comes with some serious consequences ...

I told you guys about my teeth-whitening experience from hell a while back, and now I want to share some new cautions from experts in the UK, who say they're seeing a frightening amount of young people coming in for treatment after DIY home whitening kits leave them with painful gums and teeth and destroyed enamel.

While most dental experts conclude that common whitening agents found at the drugstore and used in moderation are safe (whew--I guess I'll keep using my Crest WhiteStrips then), it's the "homemade" whitening strategies that teens and young people are turning to--many finding such tips on the Internet--that can have damaging effects.

6 Keys for Making a “Blended Family” Divorce Situation Work

Recently, my daughter Anna had her first private school parent teacher conference. It was quite different from the previous public school parent/teacher conferences, partially because this is the first year that her entire immediate family showed up.

By entire immediate family, I mean Anna’s father, Anna’s stepfather, and myself. We have never done this before, all of us at a conference, but it seemed time. Anna’s teacher didn’t skip a beat, referring to us as “Anna’s family” rather than parents. But perhaps the most gratifying thing to happen during the conference (besides discovering that Anna is doing very well), is that the teacher complimented us, saying “I don’t know what you all did, but Anna is the most well-adjusted child of a divorced family I’ve seen.”

Testosterone in Females

Have you been looking for information about testosterone in females? This article should be of some help.

Testosterone is often referred to as the 'male hormone', since it is the main hormone associated with the development of the male sexual organs and masculine characteristics like high muscle mass, a deep voice and increased facial and body hair. However, referring to it as the 'male hormone' can be misleading, since the ovaries secrete testosterone in females. It is also secreted in small amounts by the adrenal glands in both men and women. Testosterone levels are higher in men than in women, while estrogen and progesterone, the 'female' sex hormones are correspondingly higher in women than in men. Hormonal changes however, occur in several stages of life, and are responsible for the development of certain symptoms.

Testosterone Cream Side Effects

Testosterone cream side effects can lead to some complications. With the help of this article let us take a look at the negative effects of testosterone cream on men as well as women...

Low testosterone can cause problems like sexual dysfunction (or impotency), reduced libido and extreme mood swings, doctors prescribe hormonal supplements to fight these problems. Low levels of testosterone in the body can be supplemented with the help of injections, patches and creams. The natural levels of testosterone in the body may suffer a dip owing to modifications in the lifestyle, certain illness and habits like smoking and alcohol. So in order to increase this hormone in the body, supplements in the form of injections, patches and creams are administered. These days testosterone creams are much preferred over patches, since they are immediately absorbed by the skin and the effect is almost instant. This cream is used to increase the levels of testosterone in the blood, and fight symptoms of low testosterone levels in the body. Testosterone gel for women and men effectively boosts the level of testosterone and alleviates the problem. The cream or gel can be applied to the upper arms, abdominal area and also on the shoulders.

High levels of stress can lead to headaches, vision troubles, joint stiffness and other physical symptoms. Over time, these symptoms can turn into more significant physical problems. Long term exposure to extreme stress causes serious back and neck problems, psychological problems and even high blood pressure in some people.

Do you want to know which are the biggest tea brands in the world? In this article, we give you all the information that you will need about the different tea brands in the US and around the world, that let us have that morning cup of tea...

While for many people around the world, it is the morning cup of coffee that they cannot do without, there is an almost equivalent number of people who swear by a cup of tea to get them started for the rest of the day. A product of the Camellia sinensis plant, tea is made from the leaves, buds, and internodes of the plant. It is then processed and cured to create the tea leaves or powder that we can use. The beverage that we so appreciate is, of course, made by adding cured leaves or powder to hot water. Tea has the distinction of being the most widely consumed drink in the entire world. Most tea brands in the world manufacture tea from canellia sinensis. But if you are talking about herbal tea, then the presence of this plant is not required. In fact, most herbal teas are made from infusions of flowers, fruits, herbs, etc.

Tea: Are Tea’s Anti-oxidants Really Useable By the Body?

In recent years, tea has gained a great deal of attention for its ability to protect our health and prevent disease. But, many have wondered if the anti-oxidants in tea are actually absorbed by our bodies in enough quantity to really be helpful, or if we’re better off taking supplements.

Well, at least one study suggests that the anti-oxidants we consume in tea and other anti-oxidant rich foods are indeed effective. A study reported by the Journal of Nutrition studied the actual bioavailability of black tea catechins. After a 5 day period of abstaining from anti-oxidant rich tea, participants were put on a regimen of black tea 4 times per day.

Strength Training for Wrestling

Here are the top 4 strength training for wrestling exercises. After I detail the top 4 exercises, I'll detail a sample strength training for wrestling program.

Strength Training for Wrestling Exercise #1- Box Squat

There are a number of reasons why wrestlers should box squat. One, I've found that it's easier for my wrestlers to learn and execute. Nothing is more frustrating than spending hours upon hours working technique with a wrestler because that's something they already do in practice. Not only is the box squat easier to learn than the free squat; it's also more effective. I believe the box squat to be more effective primarily for two reasons. First, the pause in between the eccentric (sitting down) and concentric (standing up) simulates stalemate situations in wrestling where producing a powerful effort from your lower body may be necessary to winning that situation. Second, you are able to recuperate faster from a box squatting workout than a free squatting workout. In fact, this happened to me just this past Sunday. I was training a group of wrestlers and the bar we wanted to box squat with was being used by someone else in the gym. So on the fly we agreed that hack squatting would be a suitable alternative for the day. When those wrestlers came in on Tuesday for their next lifting session they all said they were still unbelievably sore from Sunday's workout and that walking had been a chore the last couple of days. Now, if walking is a chore, how the heck do you expect to practice at a high level??

Strength Training for a Strong Neck

Strength training is often thought of as the lurking ground for the strong and muscular among us. Only a few years ago the free weight area was a breeding ground for modern day Herculean men. Men that had on barely there tank tops and those 80's M.C. Hammer pants.

They strutted around and stuck out their chest, they made loud grunting noises and often times slammed down the free weights. The lesser among us, mostly women and average Joe's, were left to the cardio area and fitness classes.

Nightmares: What’s Normal, What’s Not

While we all may wish for ‘sweet dreams’, unfortunately, bad ones do sometimes occur.  Usually vivid and memorable, nightmares take place during Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, also known as dream sleep. Typically, nightmares decrease in frequency as we age, as young children are more sensitive to all the new (and sometimes overwhelming) stimuli and experiences they are learning to process.

While it’s quite normal for children from about 6 months onward to have the occasional nightmare, they nevertheless can have an impact on the entire family. Besides the sleep interruption itself, children may be afraid to return to sleep, leading to grogginess the following day. If not addressed, chronic nightmares can contribute to fatigue and other issues such as poor performance in school, work, and relationships.

New Clues to Flu-Asthma Link

There is a connection between the flu and people who have asthma, but researchers at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health say for healthy people, getting the flu will not cause an asthma attack.

A study in the November issue of The Journal of Experimental Medicine does say, however, that viral infections constrict the airways in the lungs of people with asthma, leading to the wheezing and shortness of breath characteristic of an asthma attack.

For those with asthma, the eosinophil, a type of white blood cell involved in allergy, is also involved in triggering asthma attacks. However, viral infections do not normally bring eosinophils into the lungs.

Sexual Fetishism: The Object is Desire

There are three types of fetishes.

The sexual fetish is like "the fetich in which the savage sees the embodiment of his god"

S. Freud, "Three Contributions to the Theory of Sex" (1905)

A. The Disorder

The propensity to regard and treat other people (caregivers, parents) as objects (to "objectify" them) is an inevitable phase of personal development and growth during the formative years (6 months to 3 years). As psychoanalysis and the Object Relations school of psychology teach us, we outgrow this immature way of relating to our human environment and instead develop a sense of empathy.

Yet, some of us remain "fixated" and do not progress into full-fledged adulthood. Arguably the most ostentatious manifestation of such retardation is the sexual paraphilia known as fetishism.

Natural Support for Sciatica

The next time you hear someone say that his or her back hurts, you may want to recommend further exploration of the discomfort, as it may be related to sciatic nerve pain and require different treatment than a muscular injury.

Pressure on the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body, may cause pain that can extend throughout the lower back and buttocks, and even into the legs and feet. Depending on the cause of the irritated nerve and individual tolerance, pain can range from mild to severe, with varying frequency, and may include other symptoms such as numbness or muscle weakness.

Natural Skin Moisturizer- Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a healthy alternative to skin care products and has been said to be one of the best natural moisturizers out there, not only does it moisturize the skin without the use of harmful chemicals, it’s also loaded with antioxidants to help repair skin damage and strengthen skin tissues, thereby preventing wrinkles.

Most store- bought creams and lotions are made of water which expands the tissues allowing wrinkles to fade away, however these effects are short-term and as soon as the water evaporates, the dry wrinkled skin returns. Using coconut oil can prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by allowing omega fatty acids to penetrate the pores, permanently plumping up the skin which makes it look and feel more supple.

The best way to prevent illness is to maintain a healthy lifestyle through proper diet and exercise and adequate sleep, but even under the best of conditions we can fall victim to the cold and flu viruses.

Here are some great foods to add to your diet during cold and flu season:

Garlic – Fresh garlic does more than scare away your mate; it actually fights bacteria.  To add fresh garlic to your diet, trying making fresh salsa at home.  Chop onions, tomatoes, bell peppers (use more than one color for maximum flavor), cilantro, hot peppers and garlic, and then throw everything into a blender.  I usually hit the blend button for a second, stir and repeat until it is the consistency that I want.

Is Having a Roommate Good for Your Health?

OK, she snores, eats your yogurt and borrows your clothes-oh and sometimes conveniently forgets to pay her half of the electric bill. C'mon, let it slide, says Alice Domar, Ph.D., a psychologist and professor at Harvard Medical School. When it comes to your health, it's better to live with her than with out her, she says.

Domar points to a recent study involving more than 138,000 people in Denmark, which made an interesting correlation between living alone and heart problems. In the end, those that lived with someone else had a far lower risk of heart problems.

I'd bet that the opposite could be true, too. If you've ever had the roommate-from-hell, you know exactly what I mean.

Garlic, a Medicinal Treasure Trove

Garlic has to be the ultimate health food. For centuries it has been used for medicinal as well as culinary purposes but now scientists are uncovering the secrets of its amazing properties. It can benefit nearly all aspects of your health from your heart to your immune system to protecting against cancer. Garlic can even assist with weight loss and impotence too.

Love it or hate it, and there doesn’t seem to be an in between, no-one can now deny the substantial research backing up the many claims of the health benefits of garlic.

It has played a central role in the healthful Mediterranean Diet for many centuries and as such is partly responsible for the lower rates of heart disease and cancer than in other parts of the western world. The Spanish have long used it as a preservative which helps to add credence to it’s anti-bacterial properties and whole books have been devoted to the health benefits of garlic, the most important of which I will try to summarize here.

Garlic

All you need to know about the stinking rose, and why one's head of state will not be doing as the Romans do.

1. The Queen is in Rome, visiting the Pope. As is customary, she has let it be known, discreetly of course, that seafood will not be on the menu. This is not, as Alan Coren suggested on Radio Four, because she is Jewish.

2. Somehow it has also been rumoured that she does not care for garlic.

3. That's a shame, we respectfully suggest, because garlic is not only nice, but tremendously good for you. Indeed, it's chic to reek.

4. It has any number of medicinal properties, some of them rather obscure.

Fruit Intake? It's the Pits

Let's face it. You're more likely to lift weights than to eat the fruit your body needs.

Only 16 percent of Americans get enough apples, oranges, grapes and the like each day, according to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Guidelines call for eating two to four small servings each day.

"Strawberries -- I can't stand the smell of them," said Marcy Wilson, a retiree in Omaha, Nebraska. "Raisins I don't like but grapes I do. I don't like cherries but I like the cherry flavor. I like cheesecake with cherry stuff on it, but I don't like the cherries."

Omahans Vicki Loeffler and her 13-year-old son, Christopher, avoided fruit for years. Loeffler developed an aversion in childhood when her parents insisted that she eat whatever fruit or vegetable she was served. Christopher ate fruit as a baby and stopped eating it as a child. He doesn't like the texture.

Sex, Lies and Celluloid: Doctors Hit Out at Hollywood

Films failing to show dangers of sex and drugs as the HIV/Aids are pandemic ignored in top 200 movies.

A team of doctors will today accuse Hollywood of irresponsibility over its portrayal of sex and drugs after a review of some of the biggest blockbusters from the last 20 years showed that only one movie made reference to a condom.

None of the top 200 films promoted safe sex, and nobody ended up with an unwanted pregnancy or any infection. The doctors, writing in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, say filmmakers should reflect the real consequences of unsafe sex and illicit drug use in their work.

Frog Eating Gears You To Success

You must be a cynic now? Intrigued? Or just plainly curious about this "ridiculously titled" article. Whatever your reasons are, there is a purpose why consciously or subconsciously you clicked on this article. One hint maybe is you're unending struggle with your job, your family or your health and you're just eager in learning the most "ridiculous" way in achieving success. Some people say that curiosity killed the cat, but definitely not in this expose.

You took the risk so let me award you with the secrets of successful people. Ever wondered how they do it? It's simple. They just learned how to eat the biggest and ugliest "frogs" in their work "pond". They geared themselves with the most powerful materials for change, "pen and paper". Successful people are organized people and are hungry for abundant achievements. Brian Tracy's book, "Eat That Frog!" teaches you how you can change your life. The book shows how you can eliminate procrastination and double your productivity while enjoying chunks of free time in your normal 8 or 12-hr shift. Promising isn't it? Of course, he just teaches people how to rediscover and rekindle what they want, plan their daily/weekly/monthly actions, prioritize their unending tasks and eat the biggest "frogs" in their work panorama FIRST. But before anything else, THINK ON PAPER! Try to get hold of a pen and a paper now and write down all your plans and daily tasks. Categorize it according to urgency and discipline yourself to only focus and concentrate only to the most important "frogs".

Eating to Live

Food prices rose about 4 percent in 2007, and just as money starts getting tight for many Americans, food prices are expected to rise another 4 percent this year.

But it's not as simple as paying more for the foods that most of us eat every day: meat, milk, coffee and eggs.

We're going to pay more for foods that will be cheapened by their manufacturers.

Do you eat Sara Lee bread? The Wall Street Journal reports that Sara Lee is "reformulating some of its regional bread brands with cheaper, lower-protein wheat."

Campbell Soup Co. is reducing the number of ingredients in its soups -- and won't tell us the percentage of reduction.

Eat Your Tomatoes

Over the past few years there have been plenty of headlines linking tomatoes with health issues, mainly the prevention of certain cancers, particularly of the prostate. Amazingly, before the early 1800s, tomatoes were actually feared because they were thought to cause disease.

The main reason tomatoes have now been linked with the prevention of prostate cancer is that they contain a powerful antioxidant called lycopene, which is found in abundance in tomatoes and tomato products. Studies have found that lycopene may help reduce the risk of some cancers and heart disease.

In a study of over 40,000 health professionals, Harvard investigators found that men who ate more than 10 servings of tomato-based foods daily -- such as cooked tomatoes and tomato sauce -- had up to a 45 percent lower risk of developing prostate cancer.

Eat With Your Elders and They'll Eat More

Sharing a meal can stimulate the appetite -- particularly among hospitalized seniors, University of Montreal researchers found.

The study, published in The Gerontologist, found the more social interaction occurs at mealtimes in hospital geriatric re-adaptation units the better food intake will be.

Danielle St-Arnaud McKenzie, who conducted the study with Professor Marie-Jeanne Kergoat, Professor Guylaine Ferland and Laurette Dube of McGill University, said most patients suffer from nutritional deterioration during hospitalization.

"Approximately 35 percent of elderly people suffer from malnutrition," Kergoat said in a statement. "That's a scary estimate when we consider that nutrition tends to deteriorate during hospitalization."

Easy Shrimp Recipes

Here are some delicious shrimp recipes, including my favorites like shrimp scampi, coconut shrimp recipe, and shrimp malai curry – a yummy Indian shrimp recipe.

There are basically three types of shrimp that you get: cooked shrimp; shrimp that has been peeled and deveined; and raw, whole shrimp that has the peel still on. All these types of shrimp are available both frozen and raw. Avoid buying shrimp if they have black spots or if they smell of ammonia.

As for the color of the shrimp, it really depends on what you prefer, since they come in various shades, such as pink, white, brown, or green. Do not get put off by the green color, because it is just the color of the shell and not the meat. In any event, shrimp become pink when they are cooked.

After the story broke that New York governor Eliot Spitzer was having sex with prostitutes, relationship experts popped up on every news channel, dispensing theories about Mr. Spitzer's behavior. Opinions about why a married man (and one with a great deal to lose) would behave this way ranged from him having unmet needs to sociopathic tendencies.
