Diabetes Insipidus: Treatments
When a person shows signs of passing a large amount of urine and excessive thirst, treatments should be started immediately. The treatments usually varies depending on the type of diabetes insipidus the person is suffering from. There are mainly four types of diabetes insipidus; central diabetes insipidus, where the person suffers from hormone imbalance due to lack of anti-diuretic hormone (ADH), nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, where the kidneys of the patient do not respond properly to the ADH, dispogenic diabetes insipidus, which is caused by mental illness and this type however has no treatment except for proper mental treatment, and gestational diabetes insipidus is rare and is caused by abnormal thirst during pregnancy.
In case of mild diabetes insipidus, no such treatments are needed. But for severe cases of diabetes insipidus, immediate medical attention is required. Low production of ADH causes this problem, hence the doctors might suggest desmopressin. This is acts as a replacement for the ADH and is more powerful than it. It stops the kidneys from passing out urine when the level of water in the body is low. The doctors will give a spray called Desmospray which you have to take in through your nose. Along with this, you will also be given some tablets for diabetes insipidus treatment. This might have certain side effects such as headache or nausea or maybe blocked or runny nose. Nose bleeds and stomach pains is also a side effect of this medication.
Thiazide diuretics are also used for diabetes insipidus treatment. This medication makes the urine more concentrated. This medication too has certain side effects such as dizziness while standing, indigestion and even the skin becomes very sensitive. Another diabetic insipidus treatment is the non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs also known as (NSAIDs). If used together with thiazide diuretics, this helps to reduce the volume of the urine further. But, if this is used for a long time then the person might be at the risk of suffering from peptic ulcer.
Thus, these are the several diabetes insipidus treatment which one can carry out in case the person is suffering from this problem. If treated properly, then it can be cured fast. Just follow whatever the doctor says and maintain a good diet. Then you will not face any problem.
